NEUTRALIZER

Neutralizing broths are used in Antimicrobial Textile Testing to neutralize the active ingredients of the antimicrobial textile material at the end of the specified contact time, making sure that there will be no residual antimicrobial activity beyond the contact time that could alter the results.

Follow these instructions to prepare Dey-Engley (D/E) neutralizing broth, one of the appropriate broths to neutralize silver agents.

D/E PREPARATION

D/E can be purchased as a powder that has to be transformed into a solution before its use. Follow these instructions to prepare 100 ml of D/E neutralizing broth using BD Difco™ Dey/Engley (D/E) Neutralizing Broth:

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Measure 100 ml of deionized water using a graduated cylinder
  2. Place the stir bar in a flask
  3. Weight 3.9 gr of D/E powder using an analytical balance and add it to the flask
  4. Add the water
  5. Place the flask onto the stir plate and stir for at least 2 minutes or until the visible clumps break down
  6. Transfer the obtained solution into a media bottle, close the lid loosely, label, and put autoclave tape
  7. Autoclave for 15 minutes at 121 ºC

MATERIALS

  • 3.9 gr of D/E neutralizing broth powder
  • 100 ml of deionized water
  • Magnetic stir plate and stir bar
  • 250 ml flask
  • 200 ml media bottle
